Doveva essere il Super Bowl di Tom Brady, quello che sigillava l’ingresso dei suoi New England Patriots nella storia del football: 18 vittorie e nessuna sconfitta, prima squadra a terminare imbattuta una stagione (in verità, c’erano già riusciti i Miami Dolphins nel 1972, ma allora si giocavano meno partite). Mancava dunque solo l’ultimo passo: il 19° trionfo, vincere il Super Bowl. Invece a 35” dalla fine di una delle partite più belle mai disputate i New York Giants, contro tutti i pronostici, rifilavano ai rivali uno sgambetto maligno: sotto per 10-14, guidati da un impeccabile Eli Manning come quarterback, nell’ultimo drive, realizzavano il touchdown decisivo con Plaxico Burress. Ora Manning, eletto Mvp, miglior giocatore della partitissima, succede al fratello Peyton: non era mai accduto che due fratelli vincessero il Super Bowl un anno dopo l’altro.
